PARTY IN BULGARIA LACKS INFORMATION ON CONTROVERSIAL ELECTORAL CAMPAIGN FUNDING
09:04 Tue 27 Jun 2006

The National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) lacked information on political funding received from Italian businessman Pierpaolo Cerani, NMSII member Borislav Velikov said.

Two months ago NMSII inspected revenue and expenditure for the last parliamentary elections and Cerani’s name did not figure in the list of sponsors, Velikov said.

NMSII would examine all documentation on the corruption controversy in which NMSII leader Simeon Saxe-Coburg was allegedly involved, Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Italian prosecution said it had evidence Saxe-Coburg received political funding from Cerani and Italian Prince Victor Emmanuel in return for participation in Bulgarian projects. Bulgarian prosecution has not received any documentation from Italy yet.

Velikov said that the controversy aimed at discouraging Saxe-Coburg from participation in the upcoming presidential elections.

Right-wing parties exaggerated the issue, without taking into consideration such scandals harmed Bulgaria’s image abroad, NMSII members said.

Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev said that evidence for Saxe-Coburg’s guilt was still missing.
