Former Interior Ministry chief secretary general Iliya Iliev, right, was arrested on March 25 on charges of overstepping his authority, tantamount to an obstruction of justice. When Iliev resigned from office last December on health grounds, Interior Minister Roumen Petkov, left, called him a man of honour, and Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev asked for ‘his potential to be preserved’. A day after Iliev’s arrest, Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev said that Iliev’s arrest was a surprise but well considered and unavoidable. He refused to comment on the charges against Iliev. Iliev was arrested a week after the deputy head of the Interior Ministry Chief directorate for combating organised crime, Ivan Ivanov, was arrested. Ivanov was charged with leaking confidential information about ongoing investigations.
