Parliament said that world figure skating champions Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski deserved presidential medal Stara Planina for their performance in the World Figure Skating Championship in Tokyo.

Denkova and Staviski contributed significantly to the development of Bulgarian sport, a Council of Ministers statement said.

The pair became world champions for the first time during the 2006 competition in Canada’s Calgary.

In March 2007 Denkova and Staviski managed to defend their title and win the gold medal for the second time.

Recently President Georgi Purvanov said that the two athletes deserved to receive the award.

Stara Planina medal is the highest Bulgarian state distinction. It is given to politicians, public figures and athletes.
