OPTIMAL NATURA 2000 INCLUSION DISCUSSED IN BULGARIA'S BLAGOEVGRAD
13:50 Wed 10 Jan 2007

Representatives of Southwest Bulgarian towns are meeting in Blagoevgrad to gain more clarity and discuss the inclusion of Bulgarian territories in the European environmental network Natura 2000.

The two Deputy Environment and Water Affairs Minister Yordan Dardov and Chavdar Georgiev would also attend the session, Focus news agency reported.

Residents of Bansko and Razlog already protested against the lack of clarity and transparency in the introduction of the network in Bulgaria. A declaration said that they were ready to continue protesting in case their demands were not met.

Natura 2000 worried residents of the region, Bansko mayor Aleksander Kravarov said. The network could hinder development, said he.

A number of property owners, invesotrs and companies are worried that the introduction of Natura 2000 would impose some construction limitation in the protected regions.

Bansko already has approved a development concept and would demand the exclusion of Pirin Mountain regions from the network plans, said Kravarov.

I am not surprised that Aleksander Kravarov is against Natura 2000 in his region. The man has accepted millions of euro in 'Bakshish' (Bribes) from property developers in the last few years. His live would be in danger if he can't deliver.
