President Georgi Purvanov should summon the national security consultative council to discuss Bulgaria's energy security in relation to the country's EU entry, Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) leader Petar Stoyanov said.
Stoyanov said that such summit should have taken place before Bulgaria signed an agreement for the provision of natural gas with Russian energy company Gazprom.
The agreement with Gazprom was signed in an ambiguous manner right before Bulgaria became EU member state, said Stoyanov as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA.
UDF energy security group co-ordinator Ilian Vassilev said that the issue was key for both the EU and NATO.
Vassilev said that the deal with Gazprom could endanger Bulgaria's acceptance of the euro because of the manner it could affect the inflation level in the country.
UDF representatives said that clarity was needed on a number of other issues, including the introduction of Natura 2000 environmental network in Bulgaria.
