OPPOSITION IN BULGARIA REFRAINS FROM REQUESTING CABINET’S RESIGNATION
09:18 Thu 28 Sep 2006

The right wing opposition parties in Bulgaria were going to refrain from requesting the resignation of the Cabinet.

On Tuesday MP and European Parliament observer Dimitar Abadzhiev said that the opposition was going to request a no-confidence motion, Novinar newspaper reported.

The reason behind such motion was going to be the critical European Commission report presented on September 26. The report confirmed January 1 2007 as Bulgaria and Romania’s EU entry date but also envisioned strict monitoring of reforms in problematic areas.

Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), United Democratic Forces (UtDF) and Bulgaria People’s Union (BPU) said they were going to work for the dismissal of the current Cabinet.

On September 27 DSB deputy head Ekaterina Mihailova said the party was going to aid the ruling coalition in meeting all EU accession criteria and completing all of the needed reforms. At the same time the party was going to remain critical, Novinar reported.

UtDF representative Eleonora Nikolova said that the ministers responsible for areas under EC criticism needed to present progress reports every five months. Among them were the Interior, Justice, Agriculture, Transport and Environment ministers.
