Calls for preservation of Bulgarian environment come from opponents of the Bourgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline project.
Opposition parties in Bulgaria pressure leftist Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev and accuse him of “deadly sins” because of the agreement Bulgaria signed with Russia and Greece for the pipeline construction, Russian newspaper Novuye Izvestiya said.
Bourgas-Alexandroupolis will transport Russian oil through Bulgaria to Greece, bypassing the busy Bosporus Strait in Turkey.
Rightist parties talk of “national betrayal” and yielding to Russian pressure.
Opposition parties said that thet Bourgas-Vlora oil pipeline was an alternative to the Bourgas-Alexandroupolis project. US capital would be invested in the pipeline construction which would transport oil from Bulgaria to Albania, the newspaper said.
Pro-US Bourgas-Vlora lobbyists tried to make use of the situation, which involves “powerful US financial support,” the newspaper said. The hopes of Bulgaria ’s opposition parties for political revenge were well supported, it said.
