ONLY 9 PER CENT OF BULGARIANS TRUST THEIR POLITICAL CLASS
16:59 Tue 06 Nov 2007 - Spasena Baramova

A survey by the World Bank revealed that only 9 per cent of Bulgarians trusted their political class. According to professor Georgi Karasimeonov, director of the Institute for political and legal studies, this was a trust crisis, which led to the teachers' strike,  Focus News Agency reported.

Karasimeonov thought the teachers' strike was an expression of the total lack of trust in the government and only showed its inability to solve problems.

Both the teachers' strike and the municipal elections were unique phenomenons because they reflected important norms and tendencies of Bulgarian civil society and its political system, Karasimeonov said when he took part in the discussion “The strike and the elections – a test for Bulgarian democracy”.

He added that a lack of trust in the state manifested itself during elections when the strongest party in the elections, was that of people who did not vote.

The attitude towards education showed how civilised a society was and the feeling that intellectual health was unimportant, was one of the reasons for the strike, Karasimeonov said.
