14:56 Wed 28 Mar 2007

US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle said that he was certain that the Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection in Libya will return home in 2007.

The US government is doing everything possible to help the Bulgarian nurses come back, Beyrle said. As an European Union (EU) member Bulgaria now has huge support for af air outcome of the trial, Beyrle said as quoted by Bulgarian National Radio.

Libya already started understangding that as long as the nurses are in prison, the country will fail to keep good relations with US and Europe.

The five Bulgarian nurses who were already sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection in Libya were recently put on defamation trial.

The nurses said that Libyan officers tortured them into confessing guilt for the intentional infection. The officers launched the defamation trial demanding compensation for the claims.

The confessions were used as the main evidence of guilt in the HIV infection trial.
