EU would refrain from introducing authomatically safeguard clauses for Bulgaria and Romania when the two countries enter the union on January 1 2007, European People's Party (EPP) leader Hans-Gert Poettering said.
Such approach would be wrong, said Poettering, as quoted by mediapool.bg.
The German Christian-Democats suggested the introduction of safeguard clauses from the very day of the two countries' EU accession.
The situation in Bulgaria and Romania will continue to be under monitoring because EU wants to be sure that the reforms continued, mediapool.bg reported.
EU will monitor the administrative and judicial reforms and the fight against the corruption.
In October 2006 main German political forces approved a declaration insisting on the introduction of safeguard clauses to Bulgaria and Romania on January 1 2007.
German chancellor Angela Merkel asked the EC to evaluate the two countries' progress in judicial and reform and fight against organised crime once again in December 2006.
