The commission for declassification of the archives of Bulgaria’s communist-era secret services decided that the file on President Georgi Purvanov had not been tampered with.
On July 19 2007, the commission announced that Purvanov had collaborated with the secret services between 1989 and 1993. His file was made public.
Ivan Kostov, leader of right-wing minority opposition party the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria said that 36 pages of Purvanov’s file were missing. Kostov accused intelligence services of “cleaning” the file.
According to the commission, pages of the file were re-numbered, but this had resulted from the transfer of documents from other files on Purvanov to the one in question, Focus news agency reported.
The documents in Purvanov’s file corresponded to the inventory, the commission said.
The commission’s decision was based on additional research and discussion of documentation. It also heard representatives of the National Intelligence Service and former employees of the communist-era secret services.
