From August 1 2007, vehicles with permanent Bulgarian registration will no longer be required to have green card insurance when entering European Economic Community (EEC) countries.
The European Council decided on July 9 this year to abolish the green card requirement for Bulgaria, Focus news agency reported.
The decision also covers Romanian-registered vehicles.
Compensation mechanisms for victims of road accidents, under the European Parliament’s Directive 2000/26, have also come into effect.
Evgeni Ignatov, representative of the local financial group DZI, told Focus that a green card would no longer be required for entering an EEC country, but would be required as proof of valid insurance because police in any of the countries might decide to check the vehicle.
