No malfeasances with European Union funds had been proved yet, Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin said during discussion in Parliament of the sixth no-confidence motion against the Cabinet on July 29 2008.
There was no proof that a single euro of EU funding had been stolen in Bulgaria, Kalfin said as quoted by investor.bg. Despite the European Commission’s (EC) warnings and the freezing of EU funding, Bulgaria only risked losing funding in the autumn of 2008 if it did not abide by EC’s recommendations, Kalfin said.
The dialogue between Bulgaria’s Cabinet and the European Commission was “normal”, according to the minister.
Funding for a number of EU members, including Greece and France, had also been frozen, but it did not lead to a governmental crisis, he said.
Kalfin said that the ultra-nationalist party Ataka and Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), as well as members of the European Parliament, contributed to the negative EC report on Bulgaria in a bid to undermine Bulgaria’s image, although they had no proof.
