NEW YORK CONCERT HONOURS RESCUE OF BULGARIA'S JEWS
13:22 Tue 06 Feb 2007

A grand concert in honour of the rescue of 50 000 Bulgarian Jews, who were saved from Holocaust during World War II took place in New York.

The concert took place under the motto Partners in Hope, in one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, Stern Auditorium of Carnegie Hall, Bulgarian National Radio reported.

The rescue of Jews resulted from the centuries-old state policy of tolerance and understanding between different religions and ethnic communities within the country, President Georgi Purvanov told the organiser of the event.

Antisemitism is non-existent in the country, but some attempts were made to provoke such, Purvanov said.
UN under secretary general Shashi Tharoor said that Bulgaria played an important role in rescuing Jews from the Nazi during World War II.

Bulgarian producer Radi Georgiev, who works and lives in Bulgaria gave the idea for the event and together with Raul Valenberg foundation worked for months on its organisation.

Holocaust survivors as well as many diplomats, Bulgarian community representatives and representatives of Jewish organisations in the US were also present at the concert.
