12:57 Fri 23 Nov 2007 - Spasena Baramova

Newly appointed UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Henry Jackelen presented his credentials to Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov on November 23, a media statement by the UNDP press office said.

Jackelen is the fifth resident representative and UN coordinator to take the position of head of the UNDP Country office, which was established in Bulgaria 15 years ago.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon appointed him after a selection procedure and consultations with heads of all UN agencies.

Henry Jackelen’s mandate in Bulgaria starts after a 4 years term in office as UNDP resident representative and UN resident coordinator in Paraguay.

Before that, Jackelen worked as UNDP deputy resident representative in Brazil.
UNDP’s work in Bulgaria was one of the most successful country programmes in the region of Europe and CIS. It involved more than 70 projects amounting to over $170 million (114.96 million euro) and has over 200 national partners, the media statement said.

The new UNDP Country programme for Bulgaria, approved by the Bulgarian Government and by the UNDP Executive Board for the period 2006-2009 was fully aligned with Bulgaria’s priorities as a new EU member state.

As representative of the UN Secretary General Henry Jackelen will coordinate the activities of all UN agencies operating in the country.
