THE Privatisation Agency (PA) will review the requirements set for the potential candidates of 95 per cent of Boyana Film, the agency’s executive director Atanas Bangachev has said, quoted by Dnevnik daily newspaper on July 6.
The agency might change Boyana Film’s sell-off plan hoping to lure more potential bidders, Bangachev has added. Under the sell-off strategy, companies with considerable experience in cinematography and film studio management will be granted a priority status in the tender procedure. In case there is no interest from film producers, the agency will invite for participation companies that supply film making services.
Meanwhile, Nu Image, the company that was accused by filmmakers of influencing the decision of the PA, announced on July 2 it is planning to shoot several new productions in Bulgaria by the end of this year. In a statement, quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA, company owner David Varod said that several high-profile movie stars, like Val Kilmer, Dolph Lundgren (as director), and Steven Seagal would arrive in Bulgaria by the end of this year to film their projects.
Varod said that having larger movie filming facilities would help him bring to Bulgaria top stars like Al Pacino, Bruce Willis and John Travolta. This is why Varod say he wants to buy Boyana Film. Supporting local film industry and promoting Bulgarian actors are also on the list of his reasons to participate in the privatisation.
“I would like to have the support of the cultural community here, and I think I deserve it after what I have done in the last six years,” the producer said. He pointed out that he has provided jobs to many people - technical specialists and actors, and they are backing him.
As a candidate buyer of Boyana Film he has the support of the Union of Actors in Bulgaria (UAB). UAB’s chairman Stefan Iliev has confirmed that and sent a letter expressing this support. The union is very pleased with the pay rates of Nu Image and the letter also informs that there is a long-term agreement between the union and the company for employing Bulgarian actors in the movies that Nu Image produces.
