Sending more police officers out on the streets was one of the ideas of newly appointed Interior Minister Mihail Mikov to improve the Ministry's functioning and its public image. On April 28 Mikov discussed these ideas with Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev.
The two discussed Mikov's ideas for structural reforms within the ministry one year before general elections for Parliament, a media statement on the Government's website read.
Another of Mikov's ideas was the restructuring of Traffic Police, the statement read, but no additional details on the idea were given.
The goal was for the Ministry to decrease the pressure on people caused by the intense traffic and improve road safety, the statement said.
Mikov also told Stanishev that it was quite possible for him to form a team by the end of the week.
After Mikov succeeded Roumen Petkov as interior minister on April 22 2008, all deputy-ministers resigned, giving Mikov the chance to form his own team.
One day before his meeting with Stanishev, Mikov told commercial Darik radio that the headline "Bulgaria in the grip of the mafia" of an article published by German magazine Der Spiegel was "highly exaggerated". Bulgaria had no mafia, Mikov said, but he acknowledged that Bulgaria had serious problems with organised crime "as any other EU country".
