New EU negotiator
15:00 Wed 15 Aug 2001

Meglena Kuneva was appointed to the position of chief negotiator with the European Union last Friday. Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg also appointed her to the position of deputy foreign minister.

Kuvena is an MP from the National Movement Simeon II (NMSII). She is a lawyer and environmental issues expert. For the past eight years she has worked for the government's legal department.

Bulgaria's former chief negotiator with Brussels Vladimir Kissyov did not intend to remain in the administration. Kissyov had strongly criticized the NMSII's platform during the electoral campaign, warning that talks with the EU on Bulgaria's bid to join the Union could be halted if NMSII won.
