The ruling tripartite coalition is drafting a new law for dealing with natural disasters.
After floods caused serious damage in the summer of 2005 several mayors complained Bulgaria lacks normative acts regulating disaster management activities, Sega newspaper reported.
A disaster management law accepted last year will be modified and will include sections for measures in case of a terrorist attack and in need of military involvement. The law will be tabled in the National Assembly by March.
The law will define co-ordination between institutions whenever infrastructure modification and repairs are needed. In this way state administrators will be ready to act in case natural disasters occur.
Mayor authority will not expand, representatives of the Disaster Management Ministry said.
It is very likely for the parliamentary opposition to support the changes as the already accepted law is inapplicable to current situations, disaster management committee member Hristo Kirchev said.
