New bicycle lane on Evlogi Georgiev Boulevard in Sofia

On May 26, Bikevolution association chairperson Radostina Marinova revealed that the transport infrastructure directorate within Sofia municipality had informed them of a plan for a bicycle lane parallel to Evlogi Georgiev Boulevard in Bulgaria's capital.

Coincidentally, Bikevolution was also proposing a project for a bicycle lane parallel to Evlogi Georgiev Boulevard designed to cut traffic and carbon dioxide emissions.

"When we submitted the project we found out that the municipality was also developing a plan for a bicycle lane on Evlogi Georgiev Boulevard," Marinova said.

Approached for a comment, Katya Simeonova from the transport infrastructure directorate within Sofia municipality, told The Sofia Echo on May 26 that their particular project had been developed some time ago.

"The project is not recent and has been prepared by a private projecting company," Simeonova said. Some aspects of the project are still being planned and a company-executor is being selected, she said. However, she was unable to specify when construction was expected to start and finish.

The new bicycle lane will begin at the National Palace of Culture. It will continue on the left hand-side of the canal parallel to Evlogi Georgiev Boulevard, reaching Zaimov Park on Madrid Boulevard. As there is an old pavement, it will be renewed and expanded, increasing from two to 3.2m wide to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, Simeonova said.

The new project's outline will be available at the transport infrastructure directorate on 17 Budapeshta Str from June 30, so the public can inspect it and make comments. An electronic copy of the project was not yet available, Marinova told The Sofia Echo.
