Bulgarian road police would not be allowed to have more than 10 leva (5 euro) on them, is the proposal from National Movement for Stability and Progress (NMSP) MP Mincho Spasov.

Spasov said he had received a lot of complaints from foreigners who had been asked to pay bribes to road police officers.

Spasov said that bribes usually are not given in small change. Under his proposal road police officers would not be allowed to have more than 10 leva on them and that only in small change. "If we cannot completely stop corruption, we can at least limit it," mediapool.bg quoted Spasov as saying.

Spasov said he thought there was nothing humiliating in the proposal, especially not for honest policemen.

Road police officers would also not be allowed to have cash money in their car or booths, because "there is no reason they can not carry a bank or credit card," Spasov said.

The measures would have to be overseen by the inspectorate of the Interior Ministry.

Spasov said similar measures should be introduced for customs officers and State Automobile Inspectorate employees.
