18:41 Tue 29 Jan 2008 - Elitsa Savova

According to unofficial statistics, 40 000 Bulgarians suffer from Alzheimer disease.

The disease was the third most serious medical and social problem in the world, neurologists said at a news conference on January 29 2008.

The neurologists presented a new medicine, which was said to have positive effect in the middle and advanced stages of the disease, Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) said. The medicine works by slowing down the disease.

Medications so far were effective only in the early stages of the disease.

The neurologists said that there was not yet a medicine to cure the disease, but early diagnosis could prevent or slow down its development.
