NESSEBAR MUNICIPALITY STARTS IMPOSING CONSTRUCTION BAN IN BULGARIA'S IRAKLI
09:00 Fri 25 Aug 2006

Nessebar municipality stopped the issuing of documents enabling construction in a number of coastal regions close to Emona and Obzor.

All properties for which the ban was valid were listed in the municipal orders concerning construction there, Dnevnik newspaper reported.

The measures were undertaken after Environment and Water Affairs Minister Djevdet Chakurov imposed  one-year ban over construction works in Irakli, one of the last remaining wild beach areas on Bulgaria’s coast.

Chakurov’s decision led to tension between ecological organisations, property owners and property companies planning to start construction works in the region.

Property owners said that the state measures equaled second nationalisation of the territories. According to some of the protesting land owners the ban only tried to force them into selling the land at low prices.

According to agents construction in Irakli was going to start soon probably directly after the end of the summer season. Too many interests were involved for the ban to remain active, according to some.

Ecologists on the other hand continue protesting and demanding that Irakli be recognised as a protected region, Dnevnik reported.
