NEARLY THIRD OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENT DEATHS IN BULGARIA INVOLVE PEDESTRIANS
09:00 Fri 30 Mar 2007

Nearly one third of the people killed in traffic accidents are pedestrians trying to cross a street at night, when drivers usually drive less carefully.

The data features in traffic police reports on accidents in Bulgaria, Novinar daily reported.

Traffic accidents and road death should become ‘social issues’ rather than simply the problem traffic police deals with, police representative Alexi Kesyakov said.

Harsher punishments for intoxicated drivers should be introduced, Kesyakov said. Interior Minister Roumen Petkov called for prison sentences for intoxicated drivers.

Transport Ministry also suggested some sanctions. One of them is taking away for life the driving license of intoxicated drivers.

Other suggested punishments include heavy fines for speeding and refraining from putting on seatbelts.  Traffic police data shows that most people were killed in traffic accidents because of excessively high speed or because they did not put on the seatbelt.

Why the suprise! In bulgaria it is normal for cars to use the sidewalk and people to use the roads. It would also appear that the majority of traffic police are parked by the roadside checking papers, rather than policing the road system.
