On April 27 Transport Minister Petar Moutafchiev presented to members of Parliament the European road safety charter.
The document aims to decrease the number of traffic accident-related deaths in Europe.
Moutafchiev said that 87 Bulgarian institutions, social organisations and businesses have suggested road safety projects in the country.
Simply signing the charter is insufficient, countries should get actively involved, Moutafchiev said.
Statistics show that annually 1090 people in Bulgaria die in traffic accidents. The number of injured people reaches 8000.
Simply promoting road safety initiatives is not going to produce results, if society lacks understanding of the problem and remains distanced, Moutafchiev said.
