Sofia's Theatre 199 was from now on going to carry the name Theatre 199 Valentin Stoichev, Bulgarian Deputy Culture Minister Nadezhda Zaharieva announced on December 18.
The decree for the change of the name was signed by President Georgi Purvanov on December 7 2007.
Valentin Stoichev was director of Theatre 199 from 1991 until he suddenly passed away in July 2007.
Stoichev was born in Rousse and studied science of dramatic art at Sofia's National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts (NATIZ).
Under his 16-year leadership, Theatre 199 became one of the most prominent theatres in Bulgaria. In 2006, the Bulgarian Union of Actors awarded Stoichev the Ikar award for Most Successful Season.
"Valentin was one of the best managers Bulgarian theatre has had. We miss him very much," Zaharieva said.
