MUNICIPALITY IN BULGARIA'S CAPITAL TO MAKE EXTRA PAYMENTS TO TEACHERS
16:11 Fri 12 Oct 2007

The money saved in salaries, which were not payed to teachers who were on strike, was going to be paid out as extraordinary remuneration, Kamen Yordanov, head of Education department at Sofia municipality announced on October 12.

In addition, Boiko Borissov's administration prepares a proposal to release funds for teachers in Sofia as an aid in transport costs. The promises have a strong pre-election campaign taste, mediapool.bg said, as the vote on spending the money would have to be taken by the new municipal council in December 2007.

The new council would have to vote on paying the expenses back-dated to October 1. According to Yordanov, from the beginning of 2008, teachers in Sofia would receive monthly support for transport. Two variants are under discussion. One is a monthly addition to the salaries, the other a free public transport card.

A one-month card for all public transport in Sofia costs 37 leva. If the municipal council would decide to go this way, this would add some 12 million leva annually to the subsidies which the Sofia Municipal transport company receives for preferential travelers.
These include cards for physically disabled, pensioners, students and school-children.
