MPS IN BULGARIA POSTPONE CHANGES TO ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION REGULATIONS
09:00 Fri 18 Aug 2006

MPs debated nearly two hours one of the most controversial texts in the new organ donation regulations and decided to postpone the final vote on the changes.

According to the disputed text, each Bulgarian could become organ donor unless a personal written declaration against the act existed, mediapool.bg reported. Relatives could also express their disagreement within a set time limit.

Until present organ donation in Bulgaria occurred only if a person had agreed in written form to become donor. The regulation impeded organ transplantation in Bulgaria since only 1500 had expressed their will to become donors.

MPs said that the law needed to clarify what should be done in case one relative of a person agreed to organ donation and another was against.

Representatives of ultra-nationalist movement Ataka said that the view of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church on the issue should also be sought.
