Mothers in Bulgaria chose June 1, the International Children's Day, to protest against state social policies that fail to stimulate parenthood and child-raising.
A protest declaration lists 10 requests, among which higher child-care state subsidies and increased number of kindergartens, BGNES news agency reported.
An online sign-up sheet supports the declaration and already inlcudes the names of 10 000 women. Starting today such lists would be spread in Sofia, Plovdiv, Bourgas Varna and Pernik.
Today protesting mothers would rally in front of the National Assembly. Some of the protesters said the currenlty allocated monthly aid for raising a child was insufficient.
Bulgaria lacks state policies aimed at encouraging childbirth, protesters said. Such stimuli would be needed to overcome the country's demographic crisis.
Some of the measures that could be introduced, according to the protesters, include a minimal child-care monthly aid of 250 leva. State financial aid should be re-calculated annually to take into consideration inflation changes, the protest letter reads.
