Finance Minister Plamen Oresharski said that funds allocated to science development in Bulgaria would increase gradually to reach one per cent of the GDP.
On June 19 Oresharski met Union of Scientists in Bulgaria representatives to discuss the allocation of EU structural funds for scientificic projects, Dnevnik newspaper reported.
Over the past few years Bulgaria provided only 0.3 to 0.4 per cent of its GDP for science, which is insufficient to guarantee a stable development, Dnevnik newspaper reported.
Oresharski said that provided the pace of reforms in other spheres like healthcare and education was maintained, the government could allocate more funds for scientific purposes.
The Finance Ministry would have better opportunities for re-structururing fund distribution patterns after a few years, Orersharski said.
During the meeting Oresharski presented the Cabinet's development strategy and six programmes, through which the country may apply for EU funding. He said that the programmes covered a variety of spheres allowing some of the money to be allocated to scientific projects.
