The social care home for disabled children in Mogilino, Bulgaria, will be shut down, Labour and Social Policy Minister Emilia Maslarova said on February 22 2008.
Apart from it, another six social care institutions for children will be closed due to bad living conditions, Dnevnik daily said. The ministry would allocate eight million leva to close down the seven homes, she added, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.
The Mogilino social care home became infamous after BBC aired a documentary on horrible living conditions. After it was broadcast, UNICEF intervened and a national campaign involving NGOs and famous Bulgarian celebrities started to help raise money so as to secure the better life of the children living there.
BBC4 aired the documentary in September 2007. It was filmed over a period of nine months at a social care home for physically and mentally disabled children in Mogilino, in northern Bulgaria, showing the poor living conditions of the children in the home.
Several expert teams that have visited the social care home have claimed that conditions have not improved despite efforts to the contrary.
