Regional Development and Public Works Minister Asen Gagaouzov half-admitted on January 8 that the response from the National Road Infrastructure Fund (NRIF) to the winter weather had been inadequate.

At an NRIF press conference, he said that the reaction to the winter storms was "possibly not on time".

"I think that I too am guilty," Gagaouzov said, but he added that the winter circumstances had been successfully dealt with.

Because the roads had been buried with snow on the first days of the new year, leading to cars stuck in the snow, problems with the delivery of supplies in dozens of villages and even the death of a young man who needed dialysis, the regional directors of NRIF in Yambol, Stara Zagora and Rousse have received their "last warning", head of the NRIF Veselin Georgiev said.

Transport Ministry said the road situation was returning to normal. Sofia Airport worked under low visibility, because of which some planes had to be diverted to Plovdiv. Other airports worked normally, with the exception of Oryahovitsa where the landing strips were icy.
