During their first press conference after their term in office started, Bulgarian members of European Parliament (MEP) decided to turn attention to the case of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection in Libya.
MEPs expressed their support for the initiative that Bulgarian media launched during a summit in Rome. Media asked rich people to aid the treatment of the children infected with HIV in Libya and to help the freeing of the nurses.
Doushana Zdravkova, MEP from the centrist Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB), said that as a woman and a mother she would always support the children in Libya and their families.
At the same time, media in Libya had to show understanding to the tragedy of the five Bulgarian nurses, Evgeny Kirilov from the socialist group in EP said.
Spokesperson of Together Against the Death Penalty Michel Taube also took part in the press conference. Taube said that the coming week was of major importance for the trial.
On June 20, Libya’s Supreme Court will examine the nurses’ appeal against their death sentences.
