Bulgarian society keeps silent about EU-related problems connected to education, healthcare, corruption and the increasing intolerance towards minority groups.
German radio Deutsche Welle commented on the situation in Bulgaria after its EU accession in view of the upcoming elections for members of the European parliament (MEP) in the country.
More than three months after the country's EU accession the political debate related to Europe has minor role, the report said as quoted by netinfo.bg.
Most Bulgarians have previously supported EU accession thinking that the European standards of living will easily transfer directly to them. The first symptoms of understanding that this is not exactly true are already visible.
The report said that the upcoming MEP elections describe the current political situation in Bulgaria very well.
The paradox is that just before the upcoming MEP election on May 20, Bulgarian politicians are concerned with issues that have nothing to do with EU.
The idea for the nomination of Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya is populist but supported by 50 per cent of Bulgarians.
Closure of units of Bulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear power plant, one of the conditions for accession, was also included in the electoral campaigns.
The fact that the Bulgarian nurses in Libya and Kozloduy became the most discussed subjects in the country show that Bulgarian society was not ready to concentrate on the main problem, what do Bulgarians want from the EU and what EU expects from Bulgaria.
Bulgaria has almost completed its justice reforms but the widespread corruption, the wars between criminal groups and unveiled murders speak for themselves, the radio said.
