Employees of the underpaid healthcare system in former socialist countries protest in demand of higher wages and better working conditions, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
The other alternative to medics was seeking employment in West European countries, the report said.
Medics in Bulgaria, a country that joined the EU in the beginning of 2007, launched protests and blocked streets in Sofia to demand higher wages.
Bulgarian doctors make between 250 and 500 euro per month. The salaries for nurses reach only 90 to 125 euro, AFP reported.
“We demand only what we deserve. We want realistic, not minimal wages,” pediatrician Plamen Georgiev told AFP.
A number of medics from East European countries have already moved abroad and have started working in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and Germany.
AFP reported that a nurse in the UK received each month 1500 euro. Polish medics constantly traveled to the UK, where they received 2000 euro for two night shifts.
