Maxim Staviiski trial scheduled
15:50 Tue 08 Jan 2008 - Elitsa Savova

The court sitting of the Bourgas regional court in the trial against double world champion figure skating Maxim Staviiski has been scheduled for the morning of January 10 2008.

The prosecution submitted the indictment against Staviiski in November 2007. Staviiski has been accused of drunk-driving, causing the death of one person and severe injuries of another.

Two local attorneys would defend Staviiski, Focus news agency said.

There were two possible scenarios of the trial. If Staviiski would plead not guilty, the trial would follow the standard judicial procedure, but if he would plead guilty the trial will be carried out under a shorter procedure.

On January 8 2007, his attorney Rossen Kozhuharov said that the defence had no intention to beat around the bush or delay the trial, as it was of no interest to its client. The defence was ready, whatever Staviiski’s decision on his plea would be.

The defence had already proposed an out-of-court agreement required and interrogation of an additional witness. Staviiski’s attorneys demanded that their client would receive the maximum possible sentencing enforceable of three years in jail with five years parole and his driver's license revoked for a three-year period.

The prosecution rejected the proposal, saying that the majority of similar trials in the Bourgas regional court over the past three years ended with an effective verdict. Moreover, the families of the victims rejected any agreement.
