MANAGER PROFILE: Prosveta

1945:
Prosveta was founded by decree of the Regents of Bulgaria, to publish textbooks, teaching aids and notebooks on all school subjects for all types and levels of schools and for all educational institutions.

Late 1950s:
Realising that the quality of Bulgarian textbooks was falling behind that of more developed countries, the editors of the publishing house arranged a comparative exposition of Bulgarian textbooks and those from other countries which made clear the need for improvement.  Funds were made able, beginning an upward trend. Also during this time period, a council was established for determining the quality of textbooks and for suggesting improvements, thus placing the publishing and creation of textbooks on a scientific footing. This was also the point at which Prosveta began participating in international book fairs.

As the number of subjects and books grew, several other publishing companies were spun-off from Prosveta, including Science and Art, and Medicine and Physical Culture, among others.

Present-day:
Still the largest publishing company for textbooks, the publishing house was now is facing competition after the fall of communism that spurred further innovation and improvements such as higher quality materials, and newer, more visually appealing textbooks as a reform from the older, communist-style ones.

Throughout its history, Prosveta has maintained close contacts with Bulgarian educators and has striven for constant, rational improvement to its textbooks and other materials, as well as working closely with state institutions to ensure compliance with Government regulations.
