Macedonian president says ‘serious changes’ needed to Nimetz’s name dispute proposal
13:21 Sun 12 Oct 2008 - Clive Leviev-Sawyer

Macedonian president Branko Crvenkovski says that without “serious changes”, the package of ideas offered by United Nations mediator Matthew Nimetz to resolve Skopje’s dispute with Greece about the use of the name Macedonia cannot serve as a basis for future negotiations.

Crvenkovski said this in a statement issued on October 10, a few days after Nimetz unveiled his latest proposals to senior envoys from Athens and Skopje in New York.

The name dispute between Greece and Macedonia arises from Greek objections to Skopje using the name “Macedonia” for the country, which Athens says could be used to reinforce territorial claims by Macedonia in northern Greece.

Although Nimetz did not reveal details of his package of ideas in New York, media reports said that the idea was to call the country the “Republic of Northern Macedonia” while its language would be called Macedonian.

Skopje’s chief envoy to the name dispute talks, Nikola Dimitrov, briefed Crvenkovski on his return from New York, after which the president’s office issued a statement effectively rejecting the proposal and saying that Crvenkovski would call a meeting of Macedonian leaders to discuss a joint stance on the Nimetz package. The saga has been compounded of late by public dissension in Macedonia about how to respond to proposals in the process of attempting to resolve the dispute.

Greek daily Kathimerini said that diplomats in Athens were “reassessing the state of play” after the statement by Crvenkovski. The newspaper said that the Nimetz ideas had been cautiously welcomed by Athens earlier this week as “a very good basis for negotiations” although it “needed improvements in certain areas.”

“According to sources, Greek government officials are debating their strategy but will await further comments expected to be made by political leaders in FYROM over the next few days,” the newspaper said.

Crvenkovski, while generally seen as more open to compromise than the group around Macedonian prime minister Nikola Gruevski, was quoted in September 2008 as saying that if no compromise was reached in the next few weeks, talks between Macedonia and Greece would be frozen for a year.

The story was complicated after, on October 9, Macedonia joined Montenegro in becoming the latest country to recognise Kosovo as independent, drawing the wrath of Serbia, which is adamant that the territory cannot be severed from it.

Bulgarian news agency Focus, quoting Macedonian agency Makfax, said that Serbian interior minister Ivica Dacic had said that Serbia should refer to Macedonia as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

Interviewed by news agency Fonet, Dacic said that Macedonia had shown that it did not respect Serbia’s position. Serbia had recognised Macedonia under its constitutional name while Greece had exerted pressure on Serbia to refer to it as FYROM.

“If we want to hit each other where it hurts mostly then Serbia would have to use the name that is used in the world – FYROM,” Dacic said.

On October 10, Serbia announced that Macedonia’s ambassador was being expelled from Belgrade. The previous day, it gave notice to Montenegro’s ambassador that she was being expelled.

the name, the territory & history of mecedonia is & has always been hellenic(Greek). the territory of FYROM was called Varder Banivona.....its never has been proper mecadonia. As gligorov said you are slavs & bear no relation to the ancient mecedonians & Alexander the great. seriously this is called identity fraud. If you go to the international court the world will laugh @ you. You will be the clowns of europe. Your ancestory is bulgarian , not macedonian or greek. Greeces history or alexander achievements are not for sale.

yeah i totally agree with you alex, this macedonian crap is total identity fraud. alexander the great and the ancient macedonians were a greek tribe who spoke greek not slavic. that's why the culture they spread around the world was greek (language, ideas, architecture--it was all greek). his freakin tutor was aristotle. i love macedonian people, but seriously, this identity thing is ridiculous. why pursue it. if you consider yourselves macedonian, then consider yourselves greek as well. learn the language and ask to be annexed to greece. maybe nimetz should propose that as a solution

@ alexander the great You say that macedonia has always been hellinc do you have any proof?? furthermore you say that fyrom was called vardar banovina off course because it was ocupied by serbia there where in yugoslavia banovina's (provinces)and they named them afther rivers/mountains etc. that was in the period 1929-1945 So how was macedonia called before it was occupied in 1913 between serbia/greece and bulgaria from the ottoman empire? And another thing you can see bulgarians macedonians as Czechs and Slovaks or germans and dutch not the same but have things in common

Here's your proof that Alexander was Greek based on historical evidence accepted from Oxford University all the way to Harvard Universty: "Αυτός τε γαρ Έλλην ειμί γένος τωρχαίον." "I am myself a Greek by ancient descent." Alexander I of Macedonia,in Herodotos' book Kalliopi,IX,45. If you think otherwise then why don't you submit an article to the Oxford Journal and see if they'll accept it?

Alexander's mother Olympias was from Epirus, a Greek kingdom so he was definitely Greek. Why do you think she claimed that he was the child of Zeus and not of Philip? Perhaps she knew that one day scum like you would usurp his name. If the Macedonians were not Greek then why didn't they spread their own language and culture around the world instead of the Greek language and culture? Why is this era not known as the Macedonian Era instead of the Hellenistic Era? You can try and claim that philip and his pple were not greek but there's no way in hell you cant deny that Olympias wasn't greek...which makes Alexander Greek which also means you despise him as you despise anything greek

It is isulting when a Greek thinks he or she are Macedonian. The claim that Alexander the Great was Greek is absurd.First of all,Greece was non existant, secondly the people of the Athenian State have nothing in common with todays Greeks.Alexander the Great was European,Mediterenian,Greeks are Afro-Asian.Therefore,Alexander the Great and todays Greeks have nothing in common, ethnicly or language and culture.Wheras the Macedonians are much closer to Alexander the Great.Furtheremore, the Macedonians are European for cencuries. The so called Greek history is Macedonian that Greece has highjucted and as of the result, Greece does not know which road to take.Today, the seam of your pants is comming appart as the truth is being revieled by whoes history you brag about.Greece,Wake up and start discovering your own history like all other nations.

According to the 2003 Amnesty International report for the former Yugoslav Rep. of Macedonia, opposition journalists and Human Rights activists face extrajudicial executions and intimidation. Furthermore, the Internationa Helsinki Federation for Human Rights has reported Police harassment of ethnic minorities, including Albanians and Roma. But its not only that. On January 11, 2004, the local authorities arrested Bishop Jovan of Ohrid and Exarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Skopje, a case which created obvious concern in the European Union regarding the protection of religious freedoms in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In addition to the above, FYROM's political stability is still in doubt as long as 25% of its population are ethnic Albanians. Despite the 2001 Framework Agreement of Ohrid which brough an end to the fighting between Slavophones and Albanians, the problem still exists as a factor of fluidity in the broader region. The solution to the issue passes through the European perspective of FYROM as well as its participation in the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
