Macedonia prepared for a reasonable compromise with Greece, not a dictate – foreign minister
18:27 Fri 01 Aug 2008 - Spasena Baramova

Macedonia is prepared for a reasonable compromise in the name dispute with Greece, but will not accept a dictate on the part of Athens, Macedonian foreign minister Antonio Milososki told Macedonian daily Dnevnik in an interview on August 1 2008.

“Macedonia is prepared for a reasonable compromise that will not endanger our language identity, our dignity and right to national self-determination. What we are not prepared for is to accept a dictate imposed by Athens,” Milososki told the paper.

What has become known as the Macedonian name dispute has been poisoning the relations between the two Balkan countries for 17 years. Ever since Macedonia broke away from former Yugoslavia in 1991, it has insisted that it be recognised under its constitutional name, Republic of Macedonia. Greece, however, has claimed that Macedonia is the name of its northern province and has said that having its neighbour use it is indicative of its implicit territorial claims over northern Greece. Although the Macedonians have denied having such claims, Athens has requested that they change the name of their state.

The dispute reached its climax in April, when Greece, pointing at the unresolved issue, vetoed Macedonia getting invited to join Nato at a summit of the alliance held in Bucharest.

The Greeks are now threatening to block Skopje entry talks with the European Union, should the dispute remain unsettled.

Macedonian diplomacy in the past two years achieved success where this depended on it, and not on the blockages of other countries, Milososki told Dnevnik. He defined what had happened with Nato as a success because all the member states had confirmed that Macedonia met the membership criteria. “Not receiving an invitation was not a result of the the Republic of Macedonia's unfulfilled tasks, but of Athens' blockage,” he said.

Milososki told Dnevnik that he would not be surprised if by the end of the year, Athens continued with its blockage strategy and vetoed Macedonia's integration in the EU as well. However, he said it was the belief of the Macedonian government that this blockage policy could be “successful” only in the short term.

It's not just that the name "is indicative of its implicit territorial claims" over the Greek province of Macedonia but the actions and rhetoric of Gruevski & Co. are even more telling of Skopje's intentions. That is why Greece continues to block their membership in these organizations. Any other country would do the same faced with such irridentist and revisionist rhetoric coming from their next door neighbor.

Milososki is ready for a compromise as long as it is not a dictate from Greece: in other words don't tell us what you want, we'll tell you what we want. In my opinion, Greece made the biggest compromise by allowing FYROM to include Macedonia as part of their country's name. I'm waiting to see how FYROM attempts to compromise. Personally, I find nothing wrong with the Vardar Republic. Why has this never been given consideration. One guess: it does not imply territorial claims against its neighbor.

Stop Skopje's persecution and ethnic genocide of Bulgarian Macedonians. It's not just the Greeks who have issues with Skopje who wants to monopolise the Macedonian identity. Cursed be Skopje!

Here is a perfect example of another similar issue in my country. So I sympathize with Greece. I always associated Macedonia with Greece, how could we change history like that. It would be like Epiros breaking off from Greece and calling itself Illyria. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,346964,00.html

Fine. Greece will keep quiet. So, what compromise suggestion do you have in mind? We're all ears. In 17 years FYROM hasn't made one single suggestion of their own. Yes Mr. Milososki, we in Greece are listening. Hello?

No nation has ever been asked to change its identity in the history of this world.Greeces argument is not with the Republic of Macedonia, but it is with the recognition of the Macedonian minority within Greeces borders that has a sizable Macedonian minority.Greece thinks they are pure race, well, they are NOT.Greece consists of Macedonians,Albanians,Vlahs,Roma and Turks. Now, to claim purity is absurd and unrealistic.Every country in this world has minorities more or less. Here is what a Greek paper said"What we have in Macedonia are neigther Greeks nor Bulgarian nor Serbs but the Macedonian people, the Macedonian minority which, in spite of all the blowsand in spite of all the repression, preserves its economic and its national existance and a seperate culture"On August 10,1920 with the treaty of Serves Greece signed the treaty under Articles 7,8 and 9,the Greek government was to undertake certain obligations regarding"the protection of the non-greek national minorities in Greece. These Articles specifically stated free use of languages and rducation.Initially Greece sought to neglect its obligations, however in March 1925 the League of Nations directed Greece to fulfill its obligations. By May 1925 an elementary school reader was published in the Macedonian language, it was known as the Abecedar. The Abecedar was to be used by Macedonian children in Macedonian schools which were yet to open in Aegean Macedonia.Serbia and Bulgaria strongly protested, why was not printed in Serbian or Bulgarian. Both countries threatend to break the treaty of Alliance. What occurred next is truly a rare example, the Greek representative at the League of Nations Vasilis Dendramis responded by defending the Macedonian language as being"neigther Bulgarian, nor Serbian but an independent language."He listed various linguists and linguistic maps as evidence to support his claim of the independence of the Macedonian language. The high ranking Greek official representing the Greek State not only recognized the existance of Macedonian identity, but openly defended and supported it.Today, Greece has changed 180 degrees. But there are many Greek intelectuals who even today are supporting Macedonians right to determene their own identity, language, customs etc.Greeces ex-premier Costantinos Mitsotakis in 1995 recognized "that the problem with Macedonia was not the name but the Macedonian minority in Greece. From the moment I first saw it I recognized Skopjes theme in its true dimentios. What made me uneasy from the begining was not the name of this country... the problem for me was how to avoid creating a second minority problem in Western Macedonia. If the problem of the Slavo-Macedonian minority in Western Macedonia is added to the Muslim minority, which sadly, with our errors is a dengerous development, the situation will become unsustanable for Greek external politics..."emphasized the former Greek Premier in the intruduction of T. Skinalis book "For the name of Macedonia"Ex-Primier want to say further" It has always been Greeces aim to have Macedonia denounce the Macedonian minority in Greece and to force Macedonia to accept international binding agreements that a Macedonian minority in Greece does not exist and to cease all propaganda aimed at Greece. This was key for the Greek Skopjan deference."remarked Mitsotakis.Outside to official Athens however, there are some Greek intelectuals who have entirely different views on the name dispute. Athena Skoulariki a sociology profesor at the University of Crete, for example says that Greece is tangled in a stategic dead end." In the course of the last 16 years we have lost one battle after another and still have not seriously considered what we are doing wrong. Why is the outside World not supporting the Greek thesis on this issue? Why after so many years of trying has Greece not succeeded in convincing the international public?asks profesor Skoulariki.According to Skoulariki the Greek arguments are not convincing because it is a fundamental right of all people to freely choose their name.We insist that our neighbor has no right to use the name Macedonia, ignoring the gact that during the 19th and 20th cencury there was a wider region called Macedonia.

Excuse ME! But my people, the Bulgarian Macedonians are being asked violently to change our identity be Skopje. You act as if Skopje is innocent and the victim here but you have NO idea what we have to go through and the SHIT we have to put with all because Skopje wants to monopolise the Macedonian identity. Skopje is a TYRANT

And by the way, does your professor Skoularaki knows how it feels to get rocks thrown at you in Skopje just because you spoke a different language like say Bulgarian? At least in Greece I dont get harassed for speaking my mother tongue so why dont you come visit Skopje and see what really goes on here

A clash between two cities, one hiding under a mask of so-called innocence, the other surrounded by an epic history that echoes into eternity. In her youth she brought down a colossal empire, the Persians defeated by a goddess city. Admired She was by Paul, a disciple of Abraham's God. Loved by the Roman Emperors and subjected by the Ottomans. Now she rightfully rules the Hellenes as before, and Dominate she will, for the people she rules love her as the eternal Goddess-City.

Athens versus Skopje: who will win? Who will dominate? It's a race against time and there can only be one Victor. Will Athens' firmness withstand or will Skopje's mask of innocence be removed to relieve it's true intentions and corruption?

macedonia shouldn't exist as it is right now, because the ethnic groups that live in macedonia right now hate each other, the albanians, the slavs/bulgarians, greeks etc. it should split into three parts, the most part belongs to the albanians, the north eastern part should join serbia, some of it bulgaria und the south east greece. then there will be no dispute. i honestly dont believe 'macedonia' will exist for long because as soon as it will join the EU, all ethnic groups will turn to their nations and dont pay attention to the slavs who are trying to dominate but wont go far with that. my 22cents.

My friend's daughter got raped yesterday in a narrow alley by Skopjians because she spoke Bulgarian and referred to herself as Bulgarian Macedonian. When will this madness end? Better to be ruled by the Albanians than the Skopjians who are slowly revealing to the world that they are the biggest racists in the Balkans and Europe alike.
