Luxembourg’s chamber of deputies approved with complete majority Bulgaria and Romania’s EU accession treaty on June 29 2006.
Foreign affairs and immigration minister Jean Asselborn said that Luxembourg gave its full support for the on-time EU entry of both countries.
The action plan Bulgaria uses to implement efficiently EU reforms before the final European Commission report on the country’s reform progress was a step in the right direction, Asselborn said.
Members of all parliamentary represented formations said that both countries achieved progress but needed to work further in several key areas.
Parliamentary debates lasted two hours, Focus news agency reported. None of the deputies objected to the acceptance of Bulgaria as EU member in January 2007.
Since Luxembourg has a one-chamber parliament, the ratification procedure in the country has ended. The final step that needs to be undertaken is treaty endorsement by the Grand Duke, which is expected to happen in the near future.
