A number of problem issues in Bulgaria continue to push foreign investors away , said US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle. There are six major hindrances to foreign investment, Beyrle said. Initially, the country needs to work on some serious changes to the judicial system, which has to become more effective and transparent. A number of good laws have been created but their implementation is still faulty, Beyrle said. Organised crime and corruption continue to negatively affect the business climate and hinder the establishment of real democratic relations between people and institutions, Dnevnik newspaper reported.
A solution could be found only through strong political will and close work between business representatives and the Government. Otherwise foreign investors would continue to consider Bulgaria an insecure place for carrying out their business activities and would turn to other countries, Beyrle said. The country also needed to work harder on intellectual rights and property legislature. Beyrle's stance is concurrent with EU recommendations for stronger measures against piracy.
