Interior Minister Roumen Petkov handed Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev and Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev a list of 304 people with two or more pending trials whose guilt has been established.
Petkov said that he expected that prosecution to conclude the trials as soon as possible, Bulgarian National Radio reported. Petkov refused to reveal the names saying the concept behind the list was the only thing that truly mattered, Focus news agency said.
The people in the list have committed crimes including car thefts, burglary, drug trafficking and falsifying documents, but all of them were released on bail. Now that the list is handed, prosecutors are expected to detain them.
Together with Velchev, the Interior Ministry has developed a strategy for common action to fight money laundering. The first results are expected by the end of June.
Former interior minister Emanuil Yordanov said that making lists of people with more than one pending trial was ineffective. He said that the prosecution should analyse and change the court practices leading to such delays in concluding a trial. Yordanov proposed setting up a common information system for more efficient crime fight.
