The families of the 460 Libyan children infected with HIV have issued a statement condemning the decision by Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov to pardon the medics found guilty by Libyan courts of deliberately infecting the children. The families called on Tripoli to break all ties with Sofia, Reuters reported.
The families want all Bulgarian citizens and companies in Libya out of the country. Interpol should arrest the medics so that they serve their life sentences in jail, a July 25 statement by the families’ association said.
On July 17, the medics’ death sentences were commuted to life in prison by Libya’s supreme judicial council. The decision came after a deal was reached with the families, enabling the families to get $1 million for each HIV-positive child.
Although it is not yet clear who paid the $460 million, the spokesperson for the Libyan families, Idris Lara, revealed that the money has already changed the lives of many of the families. It has been reported that while some have made a donation to the childrens’ hospital in Benghazi and to a mosque, other bought expensive cars and new wives.
