LIBYA TO SPEND REMITTED BULGARIAN DEBT TO OVERCOME HIV CRISIS
15:33 Thu 11 Oct 2007

Bulgaria’s Cabined decided the Libyan debt of $56.6 million to be used for overcoming of the HIV infection consequences in Libya’s town of Benghazi and relieve the suffering of the infected.

Six Bulgarian medics were accused of deliberate HIV infection in a hospital in Benghazi. They were arrested and sentenced to death, but later their sentences were changed to life imprisonment. The medics were transferred to Bulgaria where President Georgi Purvanov pardoned them on June 24 2007.

Bulgaria decided to remit Libya’s debt, dating back from the communist era, in favour of an international fund for support of the children infected in the Benghazi hospital.

On October 11 2007, Bulgaria’s Cabinet officially announced the remission, confirmed in an agreement on September 3 with the Benghazi international fund.

The funds should be used for improvement of the medical infrastructure, medical treatment of the infected children and financial aid to the families of the infected, Focus news agency said.
