Bulgarian football club Levski Sofia denied rumours in the UK press and in blogs written by Arsenal fans that Nikolay Dimitrov has signed a contract with Arsenal.
The rumours appear to have started when the Arsenal-Gunz blog posted a fabricated entry on April 28 saying that "this morning, Bulgarian International Winger Nikolay Dimitrov confirmed today he has signed for Arsenal subject to a medical for a fee of £700 000 (890 148 euro) and will sign as soon as the summer transfer window opens", quoting local Bulgarian press.
The blog has since been taken off-line, but its Google cache is still available.
The blog entry was subsequently picked up by other bloggers, including Highbury1913, and even appeared in the East London and West Essex Guardian series newspaper, which headlined Gunners believed to have landed talented Bulgarian winger.
When contacted by The Sofia Echo on April 30 and asked about a transfer deal involving Dimitrov and Arsenal, a spokesperson for Levski Sofia said "there is no such thing".
On April 30, Levski played against Chernomore in the Bulgarian competition. Levski lost the match 2-1. The only goal for Levski was scored by Dimitrov.
