11:35 Tue 16 Oct 2007

Council of Ministers would have to approve on October 18 the gradual construction of a centres for the new emergency number 112, a Disaster Management Ministry press statement said on October 15 2007.

The announcement came one day after Brussels threatened to impose sanctions because of the slow introduction of a 112 emergency number, mediapool.bg said.

The 112 number is an EU-wide emergency number for police, fire department, emergency ambulance services, and others.

Work on the introduction of 112 started in 1998, but only some 10 years later under the threat of European sanctions, Parliament would hasten a national introduction, mediapool.bg said.

In the summer of 2007, a pilot project with 112 was started in Sofia.

An inter-ministerial working group had been formed, the ministry press statement said, which would work out to introduction of 112.
On the basis of the Sofia pilot project, the national introduction would be worked out.

Five regional centres would be build in addition to the centre already in use in Sofia. The five centres could be ready by 2008, theministerial press statement said.
