INCREASED SUPPORT FOR SOFIA’S OLYMPICS BID DAYS BEFORE IOC DECISION
09:01 Mon 19 Jun 2006

Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov said that a law on the Olympic Games would increase Sofia's chances to be approved for host of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Borissov said that he hoped Sofia's bid would go to the second round of the selection process, BGNES Sport agency reported. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide on June 22 which of the candidate cities would continue to the next selection phase.

According to Borissov's plan, most competitions would take place in Vitosha mountain, close to the capital, instead of the remote Bansko and Borovets ski resorts.

Football players also decided to express their support for Bulgaria’s bid. A press conference would be held on June 19.

Bulgarian Football Union president Borislav Mihailov, Bulgarian Professional Football League president Velentin Mihov and former national football team coach Dimitar Penev will be present at the event. Other special guests include national football team captain Stilian Petrov and players Dimitar Berbatov and Valery Bozhinov.

Other famous sportsmen to support the Olympic bid include Bulgarian Olympic Committee president Stefka Kostadinova and her deputy Svetla Otsetova.
