ILLEGAL ROMA NEIGHBOURHOOD IN SOFIA TAKEN DOWN
09:00 Wed 03 May 2006

An illegal Roma-populated neighbouhood in Sofia's Malinova Dolina district was taken down yesterday.

The owner of the property, on which Roma houses were located requested official aid, in order to gain access to the terrain, Novinar newspaper reported.

Roma erected 30 shacks and did not oppose the destruction of the illegal construction.

Sofia municipality representatives said the Roma would likely be housed in another Sofia district. According to the people, who used to live in the illegal neighbouhood, the conditions there were not good enough.

Euroroma party representative Tsvetelin Kunchev said the chaotic situation resulted from the discriminatory policies towards minority groups.

The minicipality should offer alternative terrains, where the Roma could construct new shelters, Kunchev said.

hello again from Wales. WE have travelling people here too, often they camp illegally on other folks' land, people get angry and move them on. I don't know the answer, I would like to think that this clash of cultures can be resolved. I can only refer you to the works of Ian Hancock, a Rom from USA. We're all just "people" aren't we, with the same needs and dreams? Look in the eyes of your child. Leni
