HUMAN TRAFFICKING RING BUSTED IN BULGARIA'S VARNA
09:04 Fri 16 Jun 2006

The police in Varna arrested members of a group which organised human trafficking and forced women into prostitution in Belgium and Germany.

The Supreme Prosecution of Cassation, as well as the Sofia City Prosecution supervised the operation, Darik Radio reported.

All women who traveled abroad were over 18 of age, Darik reported. Most of them were offered a well-paid job abroad but were given no further detail on their future professional occupation.

Each woman earned for the group between 500 and 2500 euro, depending on the services she had to offer. According to police information some members of the group used force to make the women work.

During the police operation that took place on June 14, 15 apartments and a large number of vehicles were inspected. Officers found documents and other evidence proving the illegal activities of the group.

Varna officers detained the leader of the ring, as well as two of his accomplices.

The group began trafficking women in 2001. Police are trying to find some of the victims and to collect further evidence.
