Bulgarians travelling to Greece for the May 1-6 holiday period overwhelmed the largest border crossing with Greece, Koulata, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said.
Traffic jams started early in the morning, but reached over seven km in length, local media reported.
Police in south-Bulgarian town Blagoevgrad advised travelers to delay their trip or use alternative routes.
One of the alternative border crossings, Ilinden near Gotse Delchev, was also blocked for several hours due to traffic, which had been more than any time since the border crossing was opened in 2005.
Police said it expected similar situations at the end of the holidays on May 6, though in the opposite direction.
